The X-Sendfile HTTP header is hands down the fastest way to serve up protected content from a web application. This plugin lets Rails send files using this header through a simple, well-tested interface.

I benefit daily from open source tools like Ruby, Rails and Mongrel. This wee little plugin is just my way of giving a tiny bit back to the community that has helped me so much.
